At Southeast Community Health Systems, we’re committed to keeping our communities healthy, and that starts with education, awareness, and action. May is High Blood Pressure Education Month, a time to learn more about a silent but dangerous condition that affects thousands of Louisianans every day.
Why High Blood Pressure Matters
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often called the "silent killer" because it usually has no symptoms, but it significantly increases your risk for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. The good news? It’s preventable and manageable with the right care.
Louisiana’s Alarming Numbers
High blood pressure is a growing concern across the country, but the statistics in Louisiana are especially alarming:
- Nearly 40% of adults in Louisiana have been told by a healthcare professional that they have high blood pressure, higher than the national average of 34%.
- Non-Hispanic Black adults are the most affected group, with a 49.1% prevalence, followed by:
- Non-Hispanic White adults: 42.7%
- Hispanic adults: 28.9%
- Asian adults: 18.2%
- Men are more likely to be affected (47.3%) compared to women (39.1%).
- Older adults are at greater risk, but hypertension can impact people of all ages.
- Alarmingly, nearly 69% of patients with hypertension in Louisiana have uncontrolled blood pressure—a major risk factor for heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in our state.
