At Southeast Community Health Systems, we believe that healthcare is a human right. That’s why we are committed to providing the residents of Region 2 (the Capital Area) and Region 9 (the Northshore) with the tools they need to stay healthy, stay informed, and stay protected.
Whether you need a confidential test, a daily prevention pill, or emergency care after a possible exposure, we are here for you.
Why Knowing Your Status Matters: The Local Impact
The numbers tell a story of both challenge and opportunity in our corner of Louisiana.
The Reality in Region 2 (Baton Rouge Area)
- High Incidence: The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area consistently ranks in the top 10 nationally for new HIV diagnosis rates.
- A Growing Need: As of 2024, Region 2 accounts for nearly 19% of all new HIV diagnoses in the state.
- Young Adults: Roughly 59% of new diagnoses in Louisiana occur among individuals between the ages of 13 and 34.
The Challenge in Region 9 (Northshore)
- Rural Access: In parishes like St. Helena and Tangipahoa, accessing specialized care can be difficult. SCHS fills this gap by bringing services directly to your community.
- Late Diagnoses: In rural regions, lack of testing often leads to later-stage diagnoses. Early detection is the key to a long, healthy life.
Did You Know? The CDC estimates that 1 in 7 people living with HIV in Louisiana don't know they have it. Getting tested is the only way to be sure.
Our Prevention Toolkit: Testing, PrEP, and PEP
We offer three critical layers of protection to help you take control of your sexual health.
1. Confidential HIV Testing
Knowing your status is the foundation of all HIV care.
- Fast & Private: We offer rapid testing with results you can trust.
- No Judgment: Our clinics provide a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
2. PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
If you are HIV-negative but at higher risk for exposure, PrEP is a daily pill that is 99% effective at preventing HIV through sexual contact.
- Available at SCHS: We offer PrEP prescriptions and the follow-up labs you need to stay safe.
- Affordable: We can help you navigate insurance or find assistance programs if you are uninsured.
3. PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
If you think you’ve been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours (through a broken condom, shared needle, or assault), PEP is an emergency medication that can prevent the virus from taking hold.
- Time is Critical: PEP must be started within 3 days of exposure. If you need it, call us or visit an SCHS clinic immediately.
